Is that a question or a statement about LaRussa?
Are you watching Bryce Harper today?

Is it just me or are others sick of this whole 'Ill drill you in the ribs' next time crap - Yes its probably gamesmanship and all that, but for the most part it really is weak as pi$$ to throw a ball AT a bloke for something like that !

I disagree. It's the easiest way for the gamne to regulate itself. Stops wankers acting like wankers all the time. It fixes up the little things in the game that the umps and rules cannot.

Did he flip it as disrespect or because it was coming off anyway and bouncing up and down? That's the impression I got, I don't think he flipped it off but more pushed it our of the way.
You would have to do something worse than that to get plugged.
He would be a very protected player at his young age and prospected talent as well.

I believe he was just getting it out the road like some do as its bouncing around on their noggin.
And whilst I agree to a point P26 about 'self-regulation' of the game, that puts the judgement into the hand of some pretty stupid egomaniac 'Judy Judy's' at times.

P26, I know you and know that you're a pretty level headed kind of bloke and would imagine that if you were involved, either by action or by collaboration, in a plugging, that in your mind and given your experience, it would be "warranted". However, giving this power, and it's endless interpretations to all is fraught with danger. If something occurs on a baseball diamond that truly deserves policing, then the umpire/s should have both the structure and the power to deal with it.
In my opinion, anything else relates back to egos and perceived "insulting".
I would cop a few weeks suspension if I audibly swore at a player, yet if I plug that same guy when he steals 10 runs up, or pimps a home run, I am "doing the right thing"?
Baseball is the only sport I know of that not only has, but encourages, policing of rules that do not officially exist. In my twilight years, I am doing everything in my power to instruct those around me to play they way they want to and allow others to do the same. If you don't steal when 10 runs up/down, fine, but don't hold it against a team/player who does.

Dribble question? What parts of "professional" baseball both USA and Asia are good or bad for the Australian game? Is it OK to hit a guy in the ribs in Aus?

I asked him quite casually why he stole second and he replied 'I've got red hair, I'm short and I'm left handed so I've got nothing else going for me except wheels. Just because you guys aren't stealing doesn't mean I can't liven the game up'... Had to laugh when we threw him out at home

P26, if the rules of the game are not being broken, or even if they are, why should a participant have his own set to inflict pain on another participant?
This self regulation line is way way overblown in my opinion.
In my opinion, certainly from a club baseball point of view, flipping someone is a show of downright arrogance and could one day end up in serious injury as well as in front of a jury.
Yes there is a way the game should be played, the game should be respected, don't assume everybody has the line drawn in the same spot and is aware of the so called self regulation rules.

This topic will never get old will it.... Nor will it go away.
A hitter will take offence at any level - even at the MLB level where it's considered part of the game, if you miss and go too far in, break a hand?? There is at least 4-6 weeks of no baseball.
Saw Delmon Young for suspended for 7 days the other day or 1 week in the old language..... Without pay. No big deal right? Delmon Youngs one week of pay = $257,000US and change....

Cam, I am talking about a situation where a participant deliberately flips a hitter in club baseball, in which he takes the "rules" into his own interpretation, not an adult who is arrested after a night out

The way he's playing, Detroit won't even notice Delmon Young isn't there.

Self regulate? I have yet to see a guy get plugged (for an unwritten rule that he has broken) and walk away thinking that its part of the game self regulating. I've seen escalation from it, but not much else. This topic will have people sitting on both sides. I had a chat to my uncle not long ago about this topic and he played the game what he called hard and proper. What that meant by him is that he plugged anyone who looked at him wrong, hit a ball hard or dared hit a double or jack off him. He never got gunned but by all reports threw hard. My dad who played with him never understod why he did it but couldnt change his ways other than try and avoid the confrontation of the hitter when he got to 1st base. I don't believe it self regulates, not in club baseball anyway.

...and after you plug us then we'll plug you etc etc and eventually someone gets seriously hurt and what have we really achieved aside from remorse/regret.
Lets be honest (at least as it applies to all but the highest of grades) this is less about self regulation and more about ego.
If a bloke skylarks/embarrasses himself then tell him and/or his Manager, and if it continues then MAYBE there is a need for 'self-regulation' !

Different pitchers do it for different reasons and I cant speak for others.
Ive done it before even just because I didn't want hitters being too comfortable in the box (common for pitchers)- always had in the back of the mind that it might come through the box. Right or wrong - people will argue both sides. I felt I needed to do it to be successful so to me it was right.

If i did it, i got laughed at whilst they were walking to first base..didnt hurt that much i guess..However, I did learn to come inside more and pinpoint it like Chardy is saying...If it hit them, so be it. If it hurt ( which I can tell you was not many times ) then good.. There have been times that I have directed a pitch deliberately at someone for reasons I believed were warranted.there was that time I threw a 3-1 slider to Phil Allen that loved tapped him in the ankle and took hombrage to that and chased me halfway down to nepean hwy from the Panther dome...Also, I love the way Janet is expressing her opinion.. keep it going Jan...

On a slightly different note, I assume some of you saw that howler of an umpires decisions at coors field? 3 feet!!!!! How did he miss that? I'm not going to complain about a rough call ever again, if that happens in the show!

Even worse was the fact that the umpire who stuffed up refused to consult the plate umpire who must have seen such a blatant error..or the hot dog vendor for that matter. The whole mess could have been corrected..makes you wonder about the philosophy of the umpires working as a team.

There's a big difference between working inside and owning the inside of the plate, (and hence maybe a pitch can get away now and again) to plugging someone because a pitcher feels they have done the wrong thing. Great example of working both sides of the plate the other day was Weaver's no no. Throwing 90-91 working under the leftys elbow and running his fatball in to righties. Looked like he had all hitters off balance for the day without being overpowering. I can see it at the major level of retribution, you hit one of our guys and we'll hit one of yours. With the money being made there, a broken hand or worse (depending on contracts) can obviously mean losing money. I don't understand fully why a pitcher would take it on his own back to right a perceived wrong such as a player who steals 10 runs up, 12 runs up, 15 runs down or a player who pimps up after a long ball. In all the baseball ive seen incidents where a pitcher intentionally throws at a hitter have often escalated and been made worse.

Another howler in MLB, Mariano Rivera's careers is over after rupturing his Acl and tearing the meniscus in his left knee.....shagging fly balls pre game in kc before the game! Sad sad news, for the greatest closer ever! Absolutely pox way to finish his career! Probably deserves it's own thread.....

Gotta love the dribble thread!!
Good to hear from you Skinny - I suggest 18 holes soon. Hopefully the surgeon gives me the "all clear" next week.
Sad to hear about Rivera even as a big Red Sox fan. It was always more special to see the Red Sox win with Rivera on the mound for the Yank$.
Best thing about the play the umpire blew the other day was the fact the declined comment that and the following day. Meaning - "yeah, we f**ked up".

Well there it is ladies and gentlemen - Cole Hamels veteran pitcher just threw inside and plunked Bryce Harper.
2 out, no one on.
Message from the veteran to the new young bloke. Turn it down a little bit buddy.
