While the MWBL enjoy a somewhat robust discussion, perhaps with just over six weeks before competition commences it is time to open a threat about the DBA for season 2012.
I understand there will be some changes to the competition structure this season, as teams will be able to enter A1 grade without having to necessarily fill A2 A3 and A4 grades.
While this does open the door to clubs such as Pakenham, Chelsea and Boneo to either enter or re-enter A1 grade in 2012, which can only be a positive to the competition, it will be interesting to see just how clubs enter their teams over the next few weeks (rumour is teams have to be submitted on or around March 20 in order for fixturing to be completed).
There once was a situation where four teams were entered in C Grade and over twenty in D and E Grades.
Will the scenario be similar this season?
Who is in at your club, who has left and where will your teams be in season 2012?

Looks like it is set to remain the same as 2011, unfortunately only 7 teams in the A-grade, therefore a bye will be had.

With the lifting of restrictions to who can be a first div club, still only 7 teams in the top rung? What does that say to the further of the DBA? Great old old comp, with some very strong teams, but is it just delaying the inevitable, or can they continue to be a strong top tier competion?

Interesting information Rabbit. I had heard a couple of clubs were making the move from B to A and taking the advantage of not requiring an A2 team.
I have heard that all B1 teams are also having a B2 team, leaving one club who had entered a B2 team only as the odd one out and may have to move to satisfy the fixturing.
Have heard that the Bulldogs may be back as well, with some old hands working hard to bring Tyabb back to the DBA. With Carrum Downs perhaps not playing in winter due to ground issues, the return of Tyabb would be timely.
One wonders if an umpires belt clasp will be found down Tyabb way if the ground is back in use.

The fixture would seem to indicate 7 teams...

I agree with stu, I had heard some clubs were opting to put in an A grade team and structure other teams into grades that suited but the fixture for A grade shows the same old story. A bit disappointing that changes haven't been made and ridiculous that A1/A2 have a bye once again. I had heard some positives were coming out of the approach to this season but Wyatt may be right for once, if changes aren't made then we may not see a very bright future for the DBA, not much else to say but very disappointed. For better or worse at least some changes would have been better than no action at all

Tyabb isn't listed in any fixture so the mail on them may be wrong or they are waiting to the end to submit, Carrum have no B grade this year and Chelt are down to 5 teams with no B or B2. What happened there?
I also heard Carrum may play games out of the Dandenong softball grounds.

I had heard from a couple of sources (never go on just one these days) that Tyabb were on the way back.
Ground must still be unsafe after that incident back in 2005!
Is Carrum's ground shut down for just this season or for good?

My apologies rhricho, I mistakenly thought this thread was about the DBA 2012 and seeing as I had seen the B grade fixtures that had not been posted yet, someone might be interested. My bad, I can assure you it won't happen again.
And rhricho, if your sources told you Pakenham were 100% coming up this year and we're not, then your sources are idiots. Just sayin.

At what point did I nominate that this was only an A1 discussion champ? Also that wouldn't be the first time you called a lot of ppl at once in baseball idiots!! I was kinda looking forward to that game!!!! But I guess well just need to take our hats off again to the like of mornington and us that wanna give It a crack!!! Although we are putting 5 teams in at bony this yr, I can tell you our 1's and 2's squad will be a real development situation for us!! Giving some really good kids a go etc etc!!! Something I know mornington do also!! I watched some of the B grade final last yr and thought the standard was quite good - was looking forward to seeing both those two teams come up into A1 but like others in the league, idiots as you call them - have every right to learn that this will not be the case!!

I here some handy pick ups going to good clubs though - esp some teams that played finals last yr! not sure who's gonna get pushed out from there due to these moves?? Also, should add I hear plenty are not going around for various clubs due to long summers and others looking to change clubs due to not being happy either! thats about as much info as i can and will give out!

Stuart Capel I have talked to the umpire in question and he has the belt buckle in his possession but not the gaffer tape, that’s now in his equipment bag just in case, the umpire in question also told me that you don’t let the truth get in the way of a good story.

Great to see the DBA support a women's league again this year. There will be a 5 team competition in place, with a majority of the players Div 2 and Div 3 girls who are keen to learn some new skills and have a bit of fun in winter.
Looking forward to seeing some of the top level girls in the Aussie Squad play in the men's this year as they prepare for the Women's World Cup that will be held in Canada in August.

A couple disappointing things to see: 1. I believe the idea for the move from U16s to U17s was to bridge the gap between juniors and seniors, as well as boost numbers across junior ranks. Sad to see the 2011 U16 comp had 8 teams and the 2012 U17 comp has only 6.
2. For A1 "Game length 2.5 hours + 5 minute Rule", not 9 digs. Very disappointing from a player perspective.

I have heard that the DBA committee asked Pakey, Boneo and Moorabbin to come up into the 'A' grade comp after a strong outing last season but those clubs opted out of coming up because they have lost a few players from last season.
A lot of the games last year in the A1 didnt even go for 2.5 hours anyway. They are trying to make the games in the lower grades don't go for so long.
Also there is a 15 run rule after 5 innings.

I have heard that the DBA committee asked Pakey, Boneo and Moorabbin to come up into the 'A' grade comp after a strong outing last season but those clubs opted out of coming up because they have lost a few players from last season. For the record, it was Pakenham, not the DBA that suggested that the 3 teams move up to A grade. Pakenham had said from last years grand final, and during several informal conversations with DBA committee members that if the DBA put last years Grand finalists, Boneo and Moorabbin up Pakky would go up too making it a 10 team comp. Unfortunately for what ever reason it did not go ahead. The Pakenham Baseball Club committee have an aim to enter the A grade comp in 2013.

Ha! I'd expect it anyway, though I think I owe you a drink tomorrow night as fair compensation for 'handling'!! Just don't go the Blue Cruisers. I understand they are all reserved for one young man.
Over winter, my focus, unfortunately for DBA fans, will be the Melbourne Aces, and compiling a decent little database for me to have some fun with should I be writing about them next season.
I will however be able to provide a little piece week by week on the Berwick B3 team, who include five rookies who were Melbourne Aces members and have taken up baseball on the back of following their favourite team in the ABL. The team will also contain a player who has played one summer of baseball and has asked to learn to catch this winter (has never caught before and will be getting first lesson tomorrow an hour before the game), a teenager who tomorrow will play his first ever senior game of baseball, a masters player with all of five games of baseball experience behind him, and a couple of old hands to keep them in check to learn the game. There is also an Aces member who will be doing their scoring for the most part over the season.
That mix alone provides a recipe for disaster...or for alot of fun. Thing is I cannot work out which one. Perhaps the baseball world will know more come the end of their first game tomorrow down at Berwick as they take on Bonbeach.
I do appreciate that the pieces surrounding the competition were read over the past year or so that I have done them. Perhaps closer to finals time they may make a comeback...
Good luck to all players, coaches and officials for the weekend and for the season. Here's to an enjoyable DBA season for everyone involved in the various open age, junior and women's divisions.
