I like the pitch tracker; 83mph changeup 82mph 2 seam fastball 77mph curve 76mph slider
Suffice to say that he's varying speeds fairly well - confusing the computer.

Whilst it may be early, Josh has made Jason Heyward his biatch

Must make you feel better knowing that you're not the only pitcher out there who's change up is faster than his fastball, barbs. Haha.

Josh gave up his first two hits today, and was pulled after the second one, but still kept that ERA at 0.00 and got his first Major League hold.

Padres are now 39 - 47. Since calling up Spence they are 9 - 3 and Spence still has his 0.00 ERA. Should have called him up earlier, they could make the playoffs at this rate.

Another scoreless inning against the Giants today.
Josh entered the game in the bottom of eleven, with Padres and Giants at 5-5. He struck out Sandoval on three pitches, conceded a single and drew an infield double play to end the inning - and his pitching stint, just when it looked like he might get a rare time at bat.
At last glance, the game was still going.

Bottom of the 13th, still tied.
Spence's pinch hitter struck out as well. Perhaps Josh was tired after ten pitches! ;-)

There were two out and no one on when he was due up.
Thought they might let him swing the bat under those circumstances and toss another dig.

Is that the official 'welcome' to the big leagues for Josh?
Either way, I think most of us would want a 1.12era and 0.88whip in local ball here, let alone the Majors!

I wish my era only had one digit at the front of it! Seriously though, he has been outstanding and I think he has a huge MLB career ahead of him....

An interesting cameo against the Giants today.
Josh enters the game with two out in the top of eleven to face LH hitter Aubrey Huff, who had tied the game at 1-1 with a monster blast in the ninth. Off a full count, Huff flies out to centre to end the inning with no damage done.
Remark from commentator: "They haven't figured him (Spence) out just yet."
Unsurprisingly,a pinch hitter is used for Spence in the bottom of the inning. Turns out, though, that it's none other than another pitcher - Tim Stauffer - who steps in the bucket three times to strike out on the three ugliest cuts you've ever seen.
Not a great compliment for The Mate's hitting capabilities. ;D

Last pinch hitter for Josh also struck out.

Thats a large reason why I highly dislike the no DH situation of the National League.

And to make it an even Blacker day for Bud, Gregerson walks the go-ahead run across the plate, Sandoval singles for another couple and the Padres drop their sixth on the trot!

Josh came in today and struck-out the side (around a walk) and was again pinch-hit for.
This time at least the PH got bat on ball, and grounded out.
Give Josh a hit, Bud!!!!

Looks like the Padres Bullpen was having a quiet day... Maybe the San Diego Padres wish they were back home for Comic-Con this weekend, as Chicken Friars suggested. Or maybe they were just bored out of their minds. Whatever the case, the members of their bullpen found a way to amuse themselves on Wednesday afternoon by folding and shaping towels into Princess Leia-esque headgear.
Although I'm not completely sure who was behind the mischief, it appeared at one point that All-Star closer Heath Bell(notes) was instructing wookie, err, rookie pitcher Josh Spence(notes) (pictured shaping the towels), which leads me to believe — along with the presence of Bell's Yoda backpack (pictured bottom, far left) — some sort of initiation was taking place.
Then again, everybody was wearing the towel, so I'm not certain who the joke was on. If anyone.
That was the action in the bullpen. On the field, Cameron Maybin(notes) was the force behind the usually tepid San Diego offense, collecting four hits and scoring twice. His scintillating defense was also critical in helping the Padres hold on to the 5-3 victory, completing the three-game series sweep of the Florida Marlins.
Bell pitched the ninth to earn save No. 28.sports.yahoo.com/mlb/blog/big_league_stew/post/Use-the-force-Padres-8217-bullpen-becomes-min?urn=mlb-wp13506 Attachments:

Another scoreless/hitless innings from Josh this morning and once again replaced when up to bat with 2 out and the pinch hitter struck out. Might get a swing before the season ends!

Josh should take notes from Bell on sliding while he's at it.

Well said, billyj. We knew our boy could pitch at this level, that's for sure. We also reckon he can swing the bat, if given a chance. Padres management checks out this Forum for sure (doesn't everyone?). We'll keep the pressure on 'em to get him up there taking his licks! ;D

I know most of this is lighthearted, but to be honest stopping him from swinging until he is more established is probably a good thing. Hitting pitchers are irrelevant in this game, so let him focus on the key thing that is going to keep him in the bigs; getting guys out.
