There was a little piece in the HSun today about Brissy getting 300k to reno their ground. Seems like the media machine is building (a little) momentum in the lead up to the start of the season.

Out of interest, which dug-out is ours? 1st or 3rd base line. Normally home team sits on 3rd base - but can depend on the location. In Major League Baseball (and any brand of organized baseball I have ever been involved with) the HOME team always has the First Base Dugout. The Third Base dugout is reserved for the visiting team. EDIT: I stand corrected....MLB & most other leagues, support the home team having it's preference of either 1st. base or 3rd. base dugouts. Read more here.

As a general rule you are right BP but there are so many examples where this isnt always the case.
MLB - The Angels BV - Doncaster etc etc etc

Always?
Guess you have never been involved with( or watched on tv?) any games at Arizona, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, Oakland, Pittsburgh, or San Francisco.

I have Puma, but not in those places, in the last 8 years since living here. I watched the WS games, & unless I missed seeing it, I don't remember the Giants sitting in the 3rd base dugout during the games in San Fran. If they did, I humbly stand corrected! EDIT: You are absolutely correct. In any game that I played, in any league I played in, & any game that I watched either at the park or on TV the home team occupied the First Base Dugout. Most teams do, but I was amazed on how many don't. I guess I just never noticed the others. All I did was watch the plays, not where they sat! ;D

Dugout designation has always been an arbitrary matter, largely depending on the whim and the wishes of the home club. The Puma is correct in saying that a number of MLB clubs take third-base dugout.
In Australia, it is the same. The likes of Essendon and Doncaster are two that come to mind as occupying third base. Others - such as Werribee, maybe Sunshine and Newport - might opt for first-base side because it is closer to batting tunnels and club facilities.
To simplify matters during championships series and club finals, a league will often rule that the higher-placed side will be home side and will occupy third base if games are at a neutral ground.

Thanks kc & Puma for your info & clarification. Amazing how playing the game (non-professionally) for so many years (35+), & being a student of the game as I have been, I never knew this. What an eye opener, & here I though I was so smart! Learn something new every day! Many Thanks! BTW, here is the MLB breakdown on Dugouts: Teams and ballparks with home dugouts on the first base side (19) * Atlanta Braves (Turner Field) * Baltimore Orioles (Oriole Park at Camden Yards) * Boston Red Sox (Fenway Park) * Cincinnati Reds (Great American Ball Park) * Colorado Rockies (Coors Field) * Florida Marlins (Sun Life Stadium) * Houston Astros (Minute Maid Park) * Kansas City Royals (Kauffman Stadium) * Milwaukee Brewers (Miller Park) * Minnesota Twins (Target Field) * New York Mets (Citi Field) * New York Yankees (Yankee Stadium) * Philadelphia Phillies (Citizens Bank Park) * San Diego Padres (PETCO Park) * Seattle Mariners (Safeco Field) * St. Louis Cardinals (Busch Stadium) * Tampa Bay Rays (Tropicana Field) * Texas Rangers (Rangers Ballpark in Arlington) * Washington Nationals (Nationals Park) Teams and ballparks with home dugouts on the third base side (11) * Arizona Diamondbacks (Chase Field) * Chicago Cubs (Wrigley Field) * Chicago White Sox (U.S. Cellular Field) * Cleveland Indians (Progressive Field) * Detroit Tigers (Comerica Park) * Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim (Angel Stadium of Anaheim) * Los Angeles Dodgers (Dodger Stadium) * Oakland A's (Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum) * Pittsburgh Pirates (PNC Park) * San Francisco Giants (AT&T Park) * Toronto Blue Jays (Rogers Centre) img141.imageshack.us/img141/7723/cheerskj4.gif [/img]

Wouldn't it be logical to have the Aces dugout 3rd base side, as there is probably at least 3 times the amount of seats on the 3rd base side of the ground as apposed to the 1st base side at the Showgrounds?

Where will the clubhouse be? (if there is one). You'd want your dugout on the same side as that. If it will be off in RF somewhere, then maybe you look at which way does the sun set at the field? You want it in the oppositions eyes, not your own. And in regards to numbers of seats, I'd make the exclusive side (1st base, less seats) more expensive or even preferred seating for season ticket holders, with the other side gen admission.

That's a good point Chilli Wil, member's only 1st base side. The afternoon sun would also be setting over the back of the 3rd base dugout, which doesn't really affect anyone.

To the Management of The Aces,
Here's a thought for promotion of the Aces.
How about a celebrity game before the start of a game. I remember reading somewhere that Matthew Scarlett (Geelong F.C.) has his own diamond at his house, and invites his mates around for a game or two. Could be a winner. There could be a game between Geelong and Footscray for example. Even the supporters could fill in the holes if needed.
Dunstall and Frawley could hit a ball of the tee, as we know they can't hit moving ball!
I'm sure there's already ideas out there so here's to the Aces for the season.

Thanks buddy. I also note that they have now got the names of the coaching staff correct. Now we need to get them to correct Tristen's spelling Just one notable absentee from the current roster, Roly. Surely he has to be the first one on the plane. Nothing Roly likes more than the taste of burnt crow.

One thing I remember my concrete forefathers always reinforced: (get it, reinforced concrete) some things are best left unknown.........imagine if the airline found out the combined weight of Phil, Phil & Hogi....Jeez Louise, their system would go into meltdown As for roly being on the roster, you should realise by now that roly flies under the radar and does his best work by stealth. roly will be at the Aces opening game but will probably just keep to myself under the old stands at Norwood watching, observing, committing to memory. I'll only see the light of day so to speak when I can see that Phil, Phil, Shana & Hogi need a little "straightening out" gotta go catch the bus to the airport.....roly out WOOF

Any idea is the game will be available to watch on the internet like a couple of the Claxton Shield games were at Norwood last year?

Mentioned in another thread, but zero results, articles, anything in the small paper today, or any stage over the weekend! Not sure who is responsible for that, but a dubious start to say the least.

Aces dugout will be 3rd base side, ironically in front of GA seats, not members seats, while the opposition will have Aces members directly behind them.
Not sure of the logic, but I do admit to prefer sitting on the third base dugout when I am playing.
And you can add Sandringham, Chelsea, Malvern, Ormond-Glenhuntly, Cheltenham, Footscray, Bundoora, Carrum Downs, Mulgrave, Essendon, Doncaster, Monash University, Port Melbourne, St Kilda and Bonbeach (on their main diamond) to the clubs whose home dug-out is on the third base line.

As a right handed hitter I prefer 3rd base...but if I was a lefty I'd prefer 1st base. Easier to take a few practice hacks in the on deck circle.

Might have been a while since you've been there StuC but Bundoora hail from the first base side these days. At least the men do.

Last two times I've taken women's teams there, Bundoora has had the dug-out on the third base side.

At Mulgrave's old ground most certainly, but don't they play out of Dandenong now?
As such, the home dugout is the third-base side, yes?
(And I recognise I am likely incorect here, but I didn't know until corrected here a couple of weeks ago Mulgrave were playing at Dandenong)

Mulgraves old ground was 1st base side, now at dandy other side. Don't care either way.
