Keep working real hard Lando and for that matter all the Aussie younguns in college, it is amazing how a great attitude and work ethic sees those depth charts turn upside down from fall to spring, don't forget the guys above you on that chart play 4-6 games a week and have done for all their T Ball and high school careers....we catch them up pretty quick in a short time, keep the reports coming, it's a great read.

I am attending Riverland Community College in Austin Minnesota. The first week of baseball we had captains practice which consisted of just doing the basics, throwing and hitting live. The week after we commenced fall-ball(scrimmage games), a series of 7 games between the white team and the blue team. I myself am in the blue squad. The White squad beat the blue squad 4 games to 3 and we have now moved onto the Freshman V Sophomores series. Sophomores are leading 2 games-0 at this stage. Our team is really focused this season because we are trying to make a 3peat on winning the conference and this year winning the World series. The last 2 years the Blue Devils have made it to the world series but lost it in the first 2 games.
In recent days it has been raining a lot and has caused flooding in some areas. Our practice has been moved to the gym today because the conditions are so bad.
Its been a ball so far and i am enjoying it a lot.

Wade McConnan playing at his dad's alma mater Cypress College in Orange County, Cali.
One of the best JC's in California and the US for that matter. Quite a bit of history between Cypress and baseball in Melb. Dom Ruggiero (Blacky coach) won a State Championship with the Chargers in 1994. David May (of Malvern, VIS fame) also spent some time there in 1993 playing summer ball.
Some may also remember Kenny Briggs, a US import that played for Cheltenham in the late 90's and David Keith who was involved at Chelsea at the same time. All Cypress Alumni.
Dan Mac actually played with Cypress Head Coach Scott Pickler (still there) at Cypress in the...well along time ago. Dan also coached there in perhaps the mid-late 80's.
Wade's gonna love it and he'll do well... great program if you like to work your ar$e off.

We have been practicing indoors because the weather is starting to get bad, it even snowed a bit last week. We also have been doing weights 4 times a week.

Hey jorgo. What kind of weights program you guys running? Ie are you isolating body parts to lower, then upper? Do you work everything each work out? Focussing on speed and power or on max weight reps? Anything new your college is doing in that area you haven't seen before?

Currently we are doing the same program as the LA Dodgers and working upper body for 2 days and lower body for 2days. We will be getting a new program next week though and it will be more specific to our positions.
Because its off season we are focusing on strength and bulking up.

Ok, been a while since my last update, so I'll start from there, try and include as much s**t as I can...
Sept 18th we left at 5am for a 6 hour drive to Lincoln, Nebraska, where we played a bunch of practice games against other JUCO's at the University of Nebraska (also the home of the Lincoln Salt Dogs Indy ball team). We played 2 games Saturday afternoon. First game we won 1-0 in 7 against Cloud County C.C. (from memory), where our ace Tim Beard (younger brother of Hayden, whose on the Canberra Cavalry roster) went 5 innings for 1 hit, and I threw the last 2 for 1 walk. The next game was the night-cap against Barton C.C. which we lost 3-2 (all 3 runs in 1 inning, 2 scoring on a play where we made 3 errors). The next day we played 3 games. We beat Barton in the first game 7-6 I think, I came in and played 2B for the last inning. Then the next game we played against a team from our conference, McCook. We drew with them 0-0 thru 7 innings, I played 2B and went 0-2 (pop-up to 1B, and a flyout down LF line). And the last game we played a High School All-Star team from Kansas City (who swung tin against us). I came in and closed the game out, throwing the 7th.
The rest of the fall we played more practice games, a few against High School All-Star teams (from which our coaches were looking at guys for next year), and also against other JUCO's. Our record finished up to be something like 18-2-2 for the Fall. We have a pretty good pitching staff, but we probably need to be a little bit more consistently on offense.
The coaches were letting me play a bit of 2B (I started 3 days before we went to the University of Nebraska). I came back and they were teaching me hitting and the ins and outs of the Infield plays. About a week after i'd started hitting, we were doing a practice game at training where we had a proper field playing, and our coaches pitching to us (our pitching coach, who just finished up Indy ball, our head coach throwing some poo, and our hitting coach throwing some typical position player s**t!). My first AB I smashed a single up the middle off the pitching coach. The second AB he had me 0-2, and I was sitting on his slider (his strike-out pitch to EVERYONE). The ball was coming straight at me, and I opened up waiting for it to break thinking it was his slider. Turns out it was just a fastball, and it nailed my throwing forearm. The Head Coach pulled me off, and then told me I was done hitting as I was just starting to learn how to pitch, and he didn't want me to screw that up. That ended my hitting (after a solid week)!
To finish off our Fall season, we had a Cougar World Series, where our Asst. Pitching Coach and Hitting Coach drafted 2 teams to play a 5-game series to finish our season. The Asst. Pitching Coach drafted pitching, the Hitting Coach drafted hitters. We had the #1 (Beard) & #2 starters on the team, so we felt we had a pretty good chance. Also on my team was Max Brennen from Sydney, whereas Josh Bride was on the other team. Game 1, Beard lasted 3 innings, giving up 4 runs and having runners on 1st and 2nd. I came in and threw the next 3 shutout, and the boys managed to put a couple runs on. We came out and managed to plate the go-ahead in the top of the 7th, and we brought in another guy to close out the last. Game 2, our starter gave up 8 runs in 4 innings (a 6-run 3rd), and we struggled offensively. We managed to scrape through 5 runs, but still came up short 8-5. Game 3 & 4 got rained out, which lead to a decisive game 5 to finish it off. Our starter (another one of the coaches), put us ahead with a solo jack in the top of the 4th. We were up 1-0 going into the bottom of the 5th. They managed to have runners on 1st and 2nd with 2 out, with Bridey at the plate. On an 0-2 count, Bridey got a change-up and tattooed it to the left-centre fence (with the wind blowing in a gale. For sure a jack with no wind.), which plated 2 runs. They managed to hold us off, and went on to win the Series 2 games to 1 (still haven't forgiven Josh for that). That essentially finished our outdoor practices for the year.
Since then, we've been in the weights room. We were doing weights Monday, Wednesday & Friday mornings at 6am throughout the Fall season, which were for stamina and endurance. Since the season finished we have changed our weights program. We're now doing muscle building, trying to bulk up. Monday & Thursdays are upper body, Tuesdays & Fridays are lower body, with Wednesday reserved for team running. Weekends we get free. A few of us still throw and run everyday if we can, just because we don't want to get out of shape. And other guys... well yeah...
It's getting pretty cold here, and it's supposed to snow anyday!
We all had individual meetings with the Head Coach last week, where he discussed our grades with us, and our roles on the team. He told me that it's between me and a Sophomore on the team to become the Closer. He said we'd both done good, and it wasn't a definite thing yet, but it was down to us two to close. So the hard work is paying off.
Now just gotta wait for the snow...

We don't play again until February 17th, and that's our season opener. The town is still covered in snow til April/May. In previous years, outfielders haven't seen a fly-ball from the last practice game in October until pre-game infield-outfield for the season opener!

Ha! pitchers conditioning easy...... I disagree! Try playing on a turf field in 124 degrees Fahrenheit, which is like 51 degrees celcius and then coming back and doing conditioning after that, probably the worst day of my life!

Back in cold Minnesota where is currently 21 degrees Fahrenheit or -6.1 Celsius (this is a warm day by the way), where we have picked up practice where we left off and we are going harder at it than ever before. We are practicing everyday and lifting at least four times a week. We are currently gearing up for our 27 hour bus trip to Florida in 6 weeks time for our pre season tournament where it is a lot warmer.

Sorry mate, haven't got any women stories for you, but a quick update on how we're going.
We are currently 14-27, 7-14 in Conference, sitting 5th out of 6th in Conference. Top 4 make playoffs, and we are 2 games back with 9 to play. Lack of run scoring has killed us this season, and also sloppy defence at times.
Lamar C.C. is the best in our region by a long shot, having hit about 45 bombs as a team (we are a wood-bat Conference, so thats pretty good). Their #1 starter has thrown 80 innings or so for an ERA of 1.05, and leads the Nation in K's, and their #2 has thrown about the same innings for a 1.7 ERA and a tonne of K's too. They are generally nationall ranked, and i'm surprised they aren't atm (only receiving honorable mention at this stage).
We have 9 conference games left, 2 against Lamar this Friday, 4 against Trinidad (who are 2nd thanks to very good hitters. Their 2 & 3 hitters are both hitting about .330ish, with 10 & 9 bombs respectively), 2 against Otero who sit 3rd, and 1 tomorrow against last placed Northeastern Junior College. We need to win alot of them to scrape into the finals, where we will likely finish 4th and have to make the trip down to Lamar for a do-or-die 3-game series. And should we miss out, i'll be back wearing the blue and red of the mighty Garth!

No, I just meant i'll be back as soon as our school year is over and will be back playing for the Garth over the break! And sorry to disappoint you on the other part mate. BTD, weather here has been terrible. It was snowing during one game we played (quite literally, snow falling during the game... it was bizarre!). It is still snowing in some parts, snow fell the other night 90 mins drive from here which is just not right! We've also had a fair few games cancelled due to snow & rain. We were supposed to head to Kearney, NE (University of Nebraska-Kearney, where Jordan Mitchelhill is at) at the end of March to play against a JUCO from Kansas, but they couldn't even get the tarp off the field because of all the snow! Midwest baseball sucks! At times it even makes those Winter Carnivals seem like summer!
