The revolving door syndrome remains live and well at Baseball Australia and Baseball Victoria, with key media personnel either pulling the pin or being offloaded in recent times.
While I will stay out of commenting on what plenty believe is a toxic culture in head office, at Victorian state level the situation appears especially parlous. With just a handful of Summer League games to come, baseball people would reasonably expect that activity should be ramped up to properly cover at least the higher club divisions – IE Division 1, Division 2, Division 1 Women’s, hopefully some of the junior competitions and maybe even Masters (bless their old socks).
By “properly cover” I mean regular, reliable and timely reporting on games (at least some games, games of the day for example), with features and interviews that are constructed by baseball people. Not this lazy and demeaning reliance on whatever community newspapers might have to offer (as valuable and as well-appreciated as that external coverage might be in promotion of the sport).
Community and mainstream media should be coming to us. And they will, if they can see that baseball is getting its own house in order and is taking primary responsibility for the quality, the depth, the interest and the frequency of its reporting.
While I have no idea what if any credibility this (quite wrongly) often-discredited Forum has within the Victorian baseball community, I am calling on those with a serious interest in the health of the sport to expect and to demand better coverage for, and more dedicated support of grassroots baseball than what is currently being doled out by the state governing body.
We have tried to allow the Forum to just peter out naturally, it having led a long and fruitful online life. Maybe the time has come to reinvigorate the service as the principal means of grassroots baseball communication in this state. If that is what people might want - as seems to be the case with some of our regular entries this season.
Alternatively, maybe the BV Board – in particular its Media/Communications person (who I never met, or even heard from during my several years as webmaster/media person for BV) - just might take the time to reflect upon its shortcomings in regard to coverage of grassroots baseball. Maybe take some decisive steps to ensure that reasonably qualified, articulate and committed personnel can be sourced as a matter of urgency to at least get us through this Summer League season and finals series.
There are numerous clubs (and individuals within those clubs) that do a terrific job with their online communications (IE images, match reports, features, sponsor recognition, social media and the like). I am not going to single any of them out, because they already know who they are. Wonderful, dedicated volunteers, all of them. Not just ships in the night in search of a more attractive berth.
Surely it is possible, even at this late stage in the season, to co-opt a group of maybe four or five people under a co-ordinating person (or persons) that will commit to getting the league through the last several weeks with the positive, comprehensive, regular, upbeat media coverage that the clubs and our Australian version of the sport both deserve and are crying out for.
What about it, BV? If you don't ask, then you will never know.

It was half fu**ed before but its well and trully fu**ed now. Great job. Bit harsh enrico, especially whilst you hide behind an alias? I no longer have the energy or passion to be fully engaged in these issues. But a wise old mentor of mine had a simple philosophy on such matters...."don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution" I welcome your response, but more importantly your action towards improving the situation.

I have no idea who Enrico is but the other 2 I can vouch for as baseball lifers, only wanting the best for baseball in Victoria. People should heed their words and read carefully what they say.. KC has more knowledge about what to say and how to say it than anyone on here and Phil Allen, what more can you say about this guy that hasn't already been said.....

I'm not sure it's as easy as being part of the solution. Where is the consultation with the clubs anymore? No more p&s meetings and a clear lack of leadership in regards to direction of the future of the game. It appears the sooner bv remove themselves from running the aces, and allow themselves to run the game at the state level properly, then maybe your part the way to fixing the problem. No disrespect to Phil and skinny, but you guys aren't playing at clubs that are in need of some sort of direction from the governing body, as to the future of the competition, both short term and long term. And the reporting of the game is a big part of that future. This game is back in the governments spotlight, due to the addition back into the Olympics. So where the hell is any media either in the papers, or on radio? I'm a regular Seb listener and have my share of bertochis in the freezer...but a distinct lack of coverage on the aces speaks volumes of the apparent lack of work by the 'media department' at bv! Don't even get me started on the tribunal!

Given the media release 2 day ago its seems perfect between vb and the umps. Also any score updates as the vb web is not functioning.

And I'm not trying to defend anyone, nor condemn them for that matter. I just have difficulty accepting the motivation of some guy flipping off at all and sundry without the wherewithal to identify themselves. Perhaps he is a valuable contributor to the game here, who knows? I know you love the game, even though I don't know who you are....Your points are well made, with passion and consideration. As I said earlier I no longer have the energy or motivation to pursue the important issues, truth be known it has worn me out. But it is up to those who still have the passion to carry on the fight. Don't lose sight of the fact that what we are doing is playing a game....a game that I loved the minute it found me as an 8 year old. I hope that you, and everyone that has the good fortune to fall in love with baseball garners enough good, fun, exciting, exhilarating times to blur the nutsty times that go with it all. I love all of the people I have crossed paths with over the journey, even the people I used to hate!! Skinny?? Because generally they are good, nay, great people obsessed with a common goal. Sorry about the rant, good luck, don't give up!

Of no assistance whatever to Summer League grassroots clubs in the shorter term - IE the next several crucial weeks - is the advertisement recently posted by Baseball Victoria for a Digital Media Specialist.
While we should welcome BV's efforts to recruit a highly-trained, vastly-experienced and proven professional to the position, it should also be noted that the role will draw a salary of $ 45,000 - $ 55,000.
I don't know that too many people with the required qualifications, experience and skill set would even be getting out of bed for that.
I could be wrong, and I hope that BV can attract the best possible candidate for the position. Just as long as the right people are conducting the interviews and the right people are making the final call.

I love all of the people I have crossed paths with over the journey, even the people I used to hate!! Skinny?? Because generally they are good, nay, great people obsessed with a common goal. Sorry about the rant, good luck, don't give up! I'm Damien Lowe, Phil. you wouldn't know me because I've only ever been involved at Mulgrave(a masters flirtation at Melbourne too)and have never had any involvement at state level or the like. But I do know enough to know that your not the only person that's too tired to deal with the ongoing demise of baseball in this state. Now people probably think that because I've only been at one club I'm not qualified, and the fact that I don't know any of the hierarchy in baseball, that I don't know what the problem is. Maybe your right, but from where I stand there's a tionne of issues affecting this game right across the board, from umpires to juniors to funding at elite level. Every aspect needs attention, and I have no doubt it's impossible to look after each area on the meagre budget that's set aside to run our game. But putting your head in the sand and not getting more people involved(clubs via constant feedback) them your limiting the little good you could actually be doing! And another problem i think there is, is that the best people to run the game in this state are at the clubs...and they don't want to affect their influence on their own clubs by taking time away to run the game. If huber wants to run the aces...let him. Hey someone else in to run the state comp properly, not as an after thought! And get back to consultation via p&s meetings. They were usually hijacked by a couple of people, but at least the league was getting feedback on whether you could sit 26 or 28 dressed players for a grand final...you know the important stuff! As life member, president, secretary and committee person at the rebels for the past 25 years, I've seen it all come and go, and what we're attempting to do the past 3 seasons, has been the biggest challenge our club has faced. And we've had some cooperation from bv, so we can't complain about that. But the challenge ahead is ongoing....and the lines of communication seem to shrink more and more every week. There needs to be a huge shift in how this game is administered. But who's going to start it and when?
