Relax hank I'm having a lend. I thought the move last night was great and gm27's idea of bunting for a base hit changed my thoughts on what I'd actually do. As I've said above a couple of times, the cool thing about baseball is you can go any way with strategy. Best thing about this game.

Fair enough, perhaps a few others need to make comments and take their blinkers off also!! I did after my original post, as I took the point that the 2nd was probably a little early, however my exact timing of the game was never 100% clear.
Any of this sort of discussion for baseball can be nothing but positive, as long as it remains constructive in my view.

Heat bunting in the 3rd? ? What would that team know tho going for another title!!!!! Scored another run from this play even with Luke Hughes grounding out!! Cunningham did exceptionally well to keep him to that, but imagine the pressure he felt with that guy at the plate?

Japan, bunt in the 1st after lead off on. Sac bunt, runner on 2 hitter clutch up middle Japan on the board!
What would they know??? Keep swinging away ppl and hope for the best, prob reason our ABL team finished last with so many thinking it is wrong to do so!

Just went back and read the posts on this subject and I am just wondering which bush league Japan are playing in? Granted, Earl Weaver once wrote that bunting was a definate no no. But games are won by doing the unexpectant. Throw the book away and coach/manage with imagination and keep the opposition guessing.

In the third innings Australia's first 2 hitters got on base. The Coaches elected to let the next 2 guys hit away and one of them hits a 3 run bomb. Japan play a different game to the USA (and probably Australia) relying much more on the short and running games. I think all this game demonstrates is that there is no definitive wright or wrong answer.

didn't Hughes (prob best hitter in AUS team) hit that out in a full count with 2 out? (or 2b 2s count) How did the two guys go before him? from memory Harmon struck out and Dening flied out?? Harmon did attempt bunt from memory, then foul, then K, what if Hughes didn't hit that out?? I agree with you kind of, but OMR more so - you cannot make a book about black and white baseball and secondly - perhaps the game is changing like other sports do and you cannot play it like they did 150 years ago. Ever thought that this is why Japan have been so succesful in the WBC???
The three points I have made above in this thread also highlight this. the Heat did it and so did the Calvary, all succesfully in early timing of the game - not waiting for the last few inns where all of a sudden run production is vital!
How many times have you heard, yeh we hit the ball well but left a lot on base! My first question would be, how much pressure did you put the pitcher under when they were on base? Were those runners on 1st and/or Second or 2nd and/or 3rd??
I should add it isn't black and white and right back to page one on this thread, my main point was the aces were struggling and this should be relevant to 7,8 or 9 guys to put the bat away and start setting the table.

Please don't tell me you are going to check in on the box scores of every WBC and big league game over the next six months. Kind of moved on from this thread a month ago and I'm the one that started it...

If you have moved on, why are you still posting in it then?? My apologies for talking baseball and not realising when it is time to move on. Next time, when you think it is time to MOVE ON, can you please clearly let to myself or anyone else interested know to ensure this sort of discussion ceases immediately? Perhaps this sort of discussion or open mind thinking is not about you or I, or who is right or wrong, but a discussion to chat about different insights for coaches or players during an important time of a final or key game in the future??? Having worked with a lot pitchers and being an old one myself, I know how hard it is to pitch in a tougher situation such as 1 out, 2nd and 3rd v’s 1 out, 1st and 2nd. Something I would think you should be able to recognise from your pitching days?
Didn't go through any box scores, watched it live and once again shook my head at some of the close minded opinions above - especially the ones using a book saying you should never ever do that!!!
