I can add some context to this Boxy. As I recall it, it was a game winning pinch at-bat off the bench. Also, I am fairly certain it was his first 1st IX at-bat ever, against a handy pitcher in Brendan Wilson. And, (now the memory begins to go a little fuzzy) I think the bases might have been juiced too. That was a pretty impressive night by a fourteen year old.

Hey John, Any home run is worth savouring particularly by young blokes. But my young bloke put one over when he was still 14 (only by a few weeks) and that was at Altona with the fence back. I'm not sure when we went to wood bats only but he's always played with wood at senior level. Cheers & Merry Christmas to all. I think 03/04 was the first year of compulsory wood bats.

I was standing in the coaches box at 3rd when said 14 year old went yard off the top of the left field fence off Brendan Wilson. It was a terrific match up. Kid with good bat speed against a guy who was throwing hard at the time, under lights late. Ball hit was crushed and bounced off the top of the left field fence and over. Wasn't his first at bat in seniors though, wouldn't have thought it was a salami either ( at the time we couldn't load the bases against anyone!)

You may have to really dig into the record books but wood bats was all the rage until Aluminium bats were introduced sometime around the mid 70's.
