From the Canberra Cavalry website - dated 6/10
The Canberra "UberGlobal" Cavalry announced members of their 2011-12 team. Joining local pitchers Hayden Beard and Steve Kent who are currently pitching for Team Australia in the World Cup are players from all over the world including top American prospects.
Top Prospects: In the last few days, two Major League Baseball (MLB) teams have committed to send prospects to Canberra; the Tampa Bay Rays and the Toronto Blue Jays. Tampa will be sending outfielders Ty Morrison and Todd Glaesmann as well as catcher Mark Thomas. Morrison, 20, has been playing in the Rays organization since he was 17. He has been slowly climbing through their minor league system and played last season for the Charlotte Stone Crabs in Port Charlotte, Florida. Glaesmann, also 20, is also working his way through the Rays system and played for Cavalry coach Michael Johns in 2010 with the Princeton (West Virginia) Rays. Thomas, 23, played with Morrison in Charlotte this last season. The Blue Jays are sending outfielder Kenny Wilson and second baseman John Tolisano. Wilson, 20, played with two (2) teams in 2010, moving up the minor league ladder half way through the season. The 2011 season saw Wilson injured, with the Blue Jays seeing the Cavalry as an opportunity for Wilson to use his winter to get back to form and increase his productivity. Tolisano comes to Canberra from the AA classification having played for the Eastern League Champion New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Tolisano is the highest classified affiliated player that the Cavalry will have for the 11-12 campaign. Along with MLB affiliated players, the Hanshin Tigers will send at least two (2) players to Canberra this summer. Outfielder Yuhei Kai, who just completed his second year with the Tigers, will round out a very strong outfield for the Cavalry. According to international scouts, "There's no doubt he has a great arm. He also has some pop in his bat and can hit the ball the other way." The Tigers are also sending right handed pitcher Daiki Kiyohara. Australian Talent: Joining local pitchers Hayden Beard and Steve Kent, the Cavalry will have players from the ACT as well as other Australian talent returning to Canberra. Highlighting this group is right handed pitcher Tim Atherton. Atherton came to Canberra from Kempsey, NSW last season. After putting up good numbers for the Cavalry in 10-11 he was signed as a free agent by the Minnesota Twins. He spent this last season playing in Elizabethtown Tennessee in the same league as the Princeton Rays. Other Australian Talent joining the Cavalry are catcher Kyle Perkins, right handed pitcher Chris Kimpton, and left handed pitcher Chris Morgan from the ACT. Third-baseman Byron Aird joins the Cavalry from Western Australia, right handed pitchers Jarrett Commane and Alex Rodgers from New South Wales, and the Crawford brothers, Tristan and Nathan, both right handed pitchers, from Queensland round out much of the Australian born Cavalry.
Rounding out the Cavalry: While the final roster is not set, the Canberra "UberGlobal" Cavalry are pleased with how the team is shaping up. Two former affiliated pitchers should help the team as they push for the championship. Right-hander Brian Grening played for a number of years with the Cleveland Indians organization and is expected to be a great asset to rotation. Another right-hander Mike McGuire is a former Philadelphia Phillie prospect who is coming to Canberra on the recommendation of Cavalry head coach Steve Schrenk. Cavalry General Manager, Peter Bishell, is hopeful with how the Cavalry is looking for the 2011-12 season. "The Australian Baseball League made a commitment to Canberra to provide us with a quality team. We have been working hard to ensure that everyone that walks through the gates has an enjoyable experience at the Fort this summer, win or lose. With a roster like this, we think that the fans will be very pleased with everything this summer." The first pitch of the Cavalry season is on 4 November 2011 at Narrabundah Baseball Field against the Brisbane Bandits. Gates open at 6pm for a 7pm start. Get your tickets now and enter to win a trip to the US for the World Series.

I went to a wedding over the weekend (congrat's to Will Keys and his new wife Nicole) and there was some good chit-chat about this weekends games from players involved and seems to me there will be a couple of very competative games played this Fri + Sat with players believing this is a real opportunity to perform/audition for potential spots. With Nathan Holmes in charge of the all-star team and Phil for the Aces you can be sure both teams will be ready to play!

Good for you janet. I'm planning on going to watch this weekend. I also purchased some Aces tickets online with hopes of winning the world series package.

Hi all, I'm thinking about travelling down to Geelong this weekend but would like to know who's playing. Can I find rosters anywhere? I've heard a couple of players that have been asked but declined

big horse, the lists fell off the back off a truck but I believe at least some of the following players will be involved in the series as All-Stars.
Two lists have been drawn up for the Friday and Saturday. The selections and positions are tentative and aim to factor in travel considerations and club commitments.
There may be some who have since withdrawn and other players who will be added, but it looks like we're going to see some decent players suited up for what should be an interesting event.
I've no idea of the Aces roster, although the word is that it will not include any non-nationals for the exhibition games. While I could be corrected, it seems that the Aces may choose to this summer go with Aussie professionals, local players and non-nationals who create an impression.
The All-Star players for this series may have a fair bit to gain from quality performances in Geelong (and at club level).

KC, your ability to source information never ceases to amaze. Well done on a bit of a 'scoop' for the weekend, which I think everyone is looking forward to.
The selections of Nathan Aron and Glenn Mascoll, two Aces players from last year, in the All-Star team does raise the question as to whether either are on the Aces roster for this season. Here's hoping both are, but it would actually be nice to know.
Having gone around the facebook and twitter world on the ABL this morning, word reaches me that last year's ABL MVP Jamie McOwen has signed with Perth Heat (confirmed by a quick look at Perth's website this morning). Big signing for Perth and a big loss for Adelaide.
I understand one of the Americans who played for the Aces last year landed back in Melbourne over the weekend. Will Double-J be on the Aces roster again this year?

There's nothing too magical about it, Stuart. In fact I'm surprised that more details have not become public by now.
As expected, there have been a couple of changes (see update below) and players will not necessarily line up in the positions listed above.
I think all would agree that there's some real quality on both squads.
Friday 21 October (ready to go at 5.30pm)
Mitch Ayres (UFTG) Leigh Bertrand (Donc) Scott Carr (Donc) Cameron Lyons (Geel) Mitch Miller (Geel) Jason Ganek (Sand) Nathan Aron (UFTG) Rhett Mitchelhill (Melb) Jordan Mitchelhill (Melb) Billy Krause (Newp) Ben Knuth (Geel) Saturday 22 October (ready to go at 5.30pm)

Looking forward to the series, which should be competitive, even if a set of exhibition games.
Weather for Friday suggests a chance of thunderstorms. Are Goblin's weather forecasts out again? ;-) Here's hoping for a couple of fine nights with good baseball being played.

This weekend we are in for some great baseball action down in Geelong can’t wait to head down and watch these games. The rosters look great and everyone is keen to show off their talent hopefully in front of a good crowd. It’s disappointing to read the forum, we seem to only want to focus on the NEGATIVE stuff . It’s it about time we STAND UP and support the Aces and talk about the positives, the hard work Windsor, Phil and the Aces staff do behind the scenes not to mention the commitment by the playing group. We are not the AFL we are a minority sport trying to make head way into the Australian Sports market we need everyone to support the ACES to make sure this is successful and the ABL is around for a long time to come. The ACES are OUR team we only have one team in Melbourne so let’s stop knifing them in the back about everything and START SUPPORTING YOUR TEAM THE ACES. As they say you are only as good as your weakest link and the ACES weakest link is all the negativity at the moment.

onthebench, I was an inaugrial member (member number 126) of the Melbourne Aces, and renewed my Membership back in May. I hope that you are either a member, or will soon become one. The Aces, ABL and longevity of the league can only improve if more people come on board and purchase a membership, and I encourage everyone on the forum to do so. If you have purchased a membership onthebench, I'm glad and I am sure the Aces are glad to have you aboard. If not, get on board - there's going to be 23 games (before finals) at the Showgrounds, which is far more than any 'home' membership will get you at an AFL club.
As regards the negativity, yes, much of the information isn't 'positive', however which part(s) in specific do you take umbrage with?
We still do not have a playing roster, just on a fortnight out from the start of the season. I have been told 'most of the guys will be back'. Which ones? We just don't know. Now, I'll grant that it may be impossible to release an entire roster given we may be waiting on names from Japan as to who the Giants (or an alternative organistation) may be sending out, and that may have an impact on which (and I don't like using the term) 'fringe' players will make/miss the extended roster, but I cannot see why a month ago we could not have had at least half of the roster released.
By releasing names several weeks ago, player profiles could have been completed (had I been asked I'd have done them) and released on the website, creating extra traffic and exposure for the league and club sponsors, but instead, the website is largely dormant, and two weeks out from the beginning of the season, the website needs to be vibrant, and upbeat. As it is, the website is largely dormant. Yes, the Melbourne Aces are playing an exhibition series vs A World All-Star team on Friday/Saturday night. Have a look at the Aces website and tell me where they even advertise their own series - I can't see anything on the website's front page that advertises the series at all. Did you know Saturday's game time has changed from 3pm to 7pm? As I subscribe to the newsletter, I do, but if you don't...well, enjoy shopping at Target Country over the road for a few hours.
The membership packs, well Windsor himself said on this very thread: "Season ticket holders will be receiving their tickets along with a complete Aces kit in early September". On September 23rd, I noted on this thread "If there's been a hold-up, communicate to members that there has been a hold-up". How ironic a week later on September 30 from the Aces Newsletter: "Just a quick update on the member packs that are part of your Jet Couriers Melbourne Aces 2011-2012 package. All the items are due to be delivered in the next couple weeks and we will make them available for pick up at the season launch at Federation Square and opening night on 11 November." That's all that had needed to have previously been communicated, however it took prompting.
Even the home plate change fell short communication wise in my opinion. Home plate is moving (have heard anywhere b/w 9 and 15 feet). From the newsletter dated 15/10: "Be close to the action - come and pick your seat. We're inviting all our 2011/2012 Members to come down to the Melbourne Showgrounds the week after next to personally select their seats for the upcoming season. We will open the gates to members on Wednesday 26 October and Thursday 27 between 5:00pm and 7:00pm. For more information, look out for an email in your inbox soon. If you can't make it, please contact our office to find out more information or send us an email."
What that paragraph doesn't tell you is that if you're happy with last year's seats, it is my understanding that you can simply contact the Aces that you don't wish to move and that your seats from last year are fine. That is a detail that should have been included as it will save a few people a trip to Flemington on a Wednesday-Thursday night.
Am happy to debate the above onthebench. Let me know which parts you disagree with. Personally, I disagree with your contention that negativity is the weakest link and I also disagree with the knifing them in the back comment you made. I am a member, and I put my name to every post, so I'd love to know how that's stabbing someone in the back. Happy to hear your reasons for how you came up with that.
There are plenty of positives. We're a couple of weeks away from a 45-game season, 23 of which will be at The Show. We're going to get 23 games of quality baseball at a venue that may not have been specifically built for baseball, but geeze it sure works - I doubt there's many bad seats in the house at all. The Aces have a themesong, Cheerleaders (personally, that's a plus as far as I am concerned, it's been a while since I saw the Red Diamonds go around), the best mascot in the competition (and I believe Maverick was even voted as such), one heck of a good head groundsman, highly credentialled coaches and I think our roster did exceptionally well last season under difficult circumstances. Let's just have a roster, some membership packs, a vibrant website and some information.
Personally, I don't think that's too much to ask a fortnight out from the season's first pitch.
See you at 'The Show'!!

I started with the new league as a foundation member and extra $ supporter (special seating) for the forerunner Claxton Shield , then signed up and paid for the original Aces supporter package. When I questioned why various promises were not kept and contractual promises were not fulfilled I was given short shrift and numerous requests for info were left unanswered. What became a farce over a stupid cap spurred me (as one of the earliest supporters of the league) to keep up the pressure, you see I had also signed up and paid for my sons inaugural membership package so he could also be a part of history and after already playing the game for 16 years he could say that he was part of it from day 1. When pressed hard enough I finally received the cap but not one for my son, we also did not get our certificates citing our Foundation membership and support of our fledgling club. The reason given to me by Windsor (no less) was that we were not on their books as Inaugural members/Foundation members however they were happy to name us and parade us as such at the show grounds last season. We don't have an official stake in the history of the Aces, despite our support. I was just about ready to sign up and pay for another season this year thinking I should just suck it up and go through the hard years at the start but the threads on this forum and the fact that the only contact I've had from the Aces was about signing and paying up for a new season membership has convinced me not to. I'll still go to games and pay at the gate but only for the games I go to. Disappointing to say the least. So .....onthebench, the weakest link at the moment is the Aces administration itself, if they sort that then the negative comments will melt away.

Good to have you onboard, onthebench, though I don’t believe that Forum regulars will take too kindly to the rah rah rah hectoring about perceived Forum negativity.
The Forum is independent of any organisation. It owes nothing to anyone and it expects nothing of anyone. It provides grassroots people with an opportunity to make comment, to inform, to help, to question, to hypothesise, to suggest. And yes, to criticise where seen fit.
This is a warts and all communications vehicle that of course should - and does - respect basic standards of human decency. We are aware of our legal obligations in regard to defamation laws and our obligation to promote fairness and balanced discussion to the extent that we can.
It is easy for people to slag off at Forum discussions and to allege negativity. Yes, there have been – and will continue to be - some less than uplifting discussions from time to time. Some silly things are sometimes said.
That is the nature of the beast. To my mind, the Forum has been an overwhelmingly good and positive thing for Australian baseball in giving people a voice that enables them to inform, to discuss and debate issues of fundamental importance.
Understand that many or even most of the regular contributors to this Forum are rusted-on baseball people who want what is best for the sport. They want to see the game get better at what it does. They desperately want to see the ABL and the Melbourne Aces be successful, while they reserve the right to make critical comment about the operations of what is, after all, a professional organisation bankrolled by the biggest sporting franchise in the world.
People want to see this ABL project done properly. Not in some half-assed manner that accepts mediocrity and lays the blame for any shortcomings at the feet of its shareholders – the long-suffering baseball public. That is simply not a fair cop.
Some baseball organisations and some baseball administrators dislike the Forum for what it does. Yet they tune in to what is being said and they choose to draw ideas and material from these discussions when it suits them.
That is perfectly OK with us. It is a good and a positive thing.
However, you can’t have it both ways. You need to take the good with the not so good.
stuartcapel and perfeckt are passionate and committed supporters of our sport and of the new league. With due respect, onthebench, I submit that their concerns are factually-based, reasonable, worthy of serious consideration and far, far removed from “knifing anyone in the back” (as you allege). Tough love maybe, but eminently fair.
If you find it “disappointing” to read the Forum, then don’t. Go somewhere else where everything is rosy, where people accept what they’re dealt, where people don’t make mistakes and where people are not professionally accountable.
Good luck with that.
In the meantime, Aces management and players have the full support of the overwhelming majority of Forum members.
We know that. I’m confident the Aces know that.
Roll on the new season. We'll be there.

Interesting combination of up and coming stars with more experienced players. The incentive is there for all players to impress Aces management in vying for the season roster.

There seems to be a notable absence in that there is no mention of Mr Huber. Is he playing this season or has he gone elsewhere?
Hope to see more of Biddle and Cunningham this year. Biddle pitched a few at bats in the latter part of last season when things were desperate and acquitted himself well in my opinion.
Also nice to see "Happy Feet " Paul Rutgers back. Hope to see more of him as well during the season and not after the tourists go home like last year.

In all, 11 Aces from last season will be back in uniform for the two matches, with plenty of new names vying for positions it seems. I'll be interested to watch Matt Wilson in action. It seems he's so good, he was named twice!!
There's many a name from last year unaccounted for, though I expect several have the weekend off and some will have sadly been released. Of the Australian-based players from last year, Beresford, Huber, Russell, Mascoll, Karlsen, Aron, T. McDonald, Tamburrino, A. Tierney, A. Blackley, Blackmore, Bright (inj?), Spear, D. Hendricks and B. McDonald are not in action over the next couple of days. I would imagine Kable Hogben and Travis Blackley would be another couple of names in the mix for roster positions. Jeff Jamnik is back in town and the big Texan threw two solid innings in his first outing for Ormond-Glenhuntly last night.
Interesting to see Paul Weichard on the roster. I believe he would become the second Waverley/Melbourne Reds player behind Greg Wiltshire to play for the Melbourne Aces. Russell Spear was, I believe the first player from the old ABL player to represent the Aces, having played for the Melbourne Monarchs.
For those who remember the six Japanese players who came out from the Giants last year, their 2011 seasons back home have been as follows:
Yoshiyuki Kamei .246 3hr 24rbi 7sb 27r Itaru Hashimoto .192 0hr 0rbi 3sb 5r
Jumpei Ono 2-2 3.75era 1.56whip 48ip Norihito Kaneto 2-4 3.92era 1.23era 57.1ip Masumi Hishino 0-0 13.50era 1.88whip 2.2ip
Takahiro Ijyuin is on the developmental roster, along with Adam Bright.
Looking forward to tonight and tomorrow. Forget Goblin's weather, we're going to get two good games in.
---
Just an amendment to the above, Greg Wiltshire actually played for the Aces before Russell Spear last year. Greg even threw the first pitch at 'The Show' when the Canberra series finally got on after the inclement weather that marred the opening series.

The Aces and All-Stars look pretty impressive, assuming that those listed actually play.
At least one of the All-Star players won't be there. Seems his name was offered by his club a couple of weeks ago. Hearing nothing more about it, he made other arrangements in the belief that he was not required.
This may be an unfortunate one-off. Let's hope that all other listed players have been contacted and have made a commitment to be there.

Why does it seem like it's waverley vs the all stars? Clean it up Phil dale that's crap. There are plenty of names on that list not from Waverley, not too sure what you are getting at? Plenty of boys from Essendon on the list too. Maybe those two clubs are premier clubs at Div 1 for a reason? (ie, they have VERY GOOD PLAYERS!!) If the players are the best available, and they just happen to play at Waverley, why would the organisation not pick them? Doesn't it also make sense that the appointed coach is likely the best coach in the state? And if he so happens to coach club ball (which he does) that the club he coaches would produce some of the best talent in the state? (which they do). Anyone not on the list you think should be in there? Instead of such a useless post, maybe you have something constructive to offer?

Just home from Geelong after an enjoyable night of baseball. Aces winning 4-1. The weather was kind and the baseball very good. While there weren't many regulars from last season in action, personally I found it fantastic to see a crop of young players, many of who are perhaps fighting for a handful of roster spots, for the first time. The young throwers acquitted themselves exceptionally well.
I did read above critisism of their selection process. After their showings tonight, may I suggest that their selections were justified - shrewd selections by the coaching staff.
Well done to all and sundry involved in putting the game together. Looking forward to another good game tomorrow night.

Apart from the quality of the baseball and a surprisingly good crowd, what genuinely pleased me about tonight was the effort of the Melbourne Aces organisation to get news posted ASAP on their website (and on this Forum). Baseball Victoria was waaaay way behind (c'mon lift your game, folks). ;D www.baseballvictoria.com.au/
