10 mins away from park and wondering whether to bother. Looks pretty constant. Fact that ABL even attempted suggests they know something I don't...

Tonight's game was officiallly "called" at just after seven, with conditions making the game unplayable.
Two games are scheduled for tomorrow, with the conditions appearing much more favourable as the day progresses.
While Aces management is anxious to have the two games played, they are concerned about the state of the ground after copping so much rain. They would very much appreciate anyone who is able to help out - in the morning - with getting the ground game-ready. If you are able to help, please call Windsor Knox on 0401 463763.
The two rainouts will be rescheduled for a later date, possibly as a double-header on a Saturday.
A terrible break for the Aces organisation, which worked its butt off to try to get on the park in the past 24 hours. But the support on Friday, especially, suggests that there will be plenty of good times and a great future for the club in months and years to come.
Start times on Sunday: 12.00 PM and 3.30 PM.

Upsetting that I will now miss the very first game of the new franchise at their new stadium. Hopefully this city sees a lot of baseball tomorrow. Already had more washouts than the last two winters combined I reckon!

Thankyou to everyone that helped to try and get this weekend happening (against all odds) for our entertainment and enjoyment. It certainly wouldn't be for massive profit, or any profit for that matter. If the players and Aces orginisation and volunteers can do what they did and front up for the big start and come back for a second and third crack then my disappointment pales into insignificance. We can't control the weather and thank God for that!

Looking at the BOM radar it looks like the only thing that could be a problem is the condition of the field after all the rain.
By the looks of the radar at 9.30am it shows only minor sprinkes with the major rain already well and truely passed and showing nothing major heading this way.
If ground surface is playable, (it all comes down to the how good their drainage system is), both games should go on.

Update from the ground at 10.30 AM.
Rain has stopped (but showers could still be to come). Windy and cold (well, it IS summer baseball after all),
Some surface water that is being worked on.

Goblin, I would have thought the ground wetness would be a big factor too. But going by ABL PR it sounds to me like games are on provided nothing is falling from the sky. Also considering they were waiting for the rain to stop on Friday, even though the ground would have been really wet. Not sure?

Warm coat and umbrella a must. (also something to wipe wet seat)

Good luck in Melbourne today blokes, let's hope you can get at least 1 game in today and a dedicated crowd show up. I suspect when you get a series with good weather, possibly a record ABL crowd so far in Melbourne. I'm hoping for a 2,000+ crowd at a game next Bandits home series.
Gotta hand it to your volunteers and Aces staff for sticking with it in crappy weather.
I was at the Brissy RNA 2nd Game V Perth when it rained or drizzled all night and due to the great efforts of volunteer ground staff, they amazingly got 9 Innings in and a crowd of close to 800.
I hope ACES management fight their way through a tough opening series abd crowds bounce back the next Melbourne series . I think all forum members would agree we need to stay positive across the Nation for the sake of ABL long term.
(PS.. GO BANDITS today... A win today would make us 5-3 V Blue Sox overall....)

We are underway at the show. First pitch was from Greg Wiltshire for a ball and lessors walked. A grounder and two k's later and Greg was out of the innings. I think Wiltshire's name is spelt wrong on his jersey!!!

6 to 2 time and game. W(h)iltshire threw a complete game. Aces hit four home runs which accounted for all six runs and also completed three double plays including Andy Russell catching a fly in right and getting the runner back at first. Five jacks for the game and wind still blowing to right for game two in 15 minutes

Thank god we could actually get two games in. They were important as Canberra seem to be the struggling team of the competition, and with a home ground advantage we were never going to drop them.

And the most amazing thing happened during the 2nd game........the sun came out! The short fence at right field makes for good entertainment too.

Hey i dont understand all the complaints, i just looked at the video and apart from grass issues in the outfield the ballpark looks great- especially when you consider its the first year and only a few weeks in. I am a former groundsman at baseball park in Perth and still help out every week and i can tell you we had issues and still do (all to do with limited funding) thats the way it is here in Australia. We still make improvements every year. Sure we started with a proper shaped field but our grounds were literally a horse and cow paddock before ,and it takes years to improve a field unless you have $250k to spend on turf in the first year. I like the field layout- your own little green monster, I especially like what i suppose most of you dont like - the warning track around home plate and up the lines. If you knew how much work is involved keeping high traffic turf areas maintained. -- Go buy a heap of 20kg bags of kitty litter for those 5 min heavy downpours during a game- they work wonders. At least you can tarp the cutouts if it rains heavy- over here its all over red rover, a full field tarp needs 20-30 guys on hand all day to lay it out, so we dont have on. Anyway good luck and great to see baseball people helping to get this new ABL underway- i would definately help if i were there, might fly over sometime, and hope to see all grounds by next year

You're right Perfekt, there was a colour in the sky I didn't recognise for a bit until the good lady wife told me it was the colour blue - I'd not seen it before at the Showgrounds (having experienced Friday, Saturday and the seat allocation day). It actually peeked through in the early game for a few minutes - just before the last little sprinkle, but otherwise, the day was a good one for baseball - the ABL finally back in this great state. Aces hit the ball hard enough, hitting six jacks for the game, but it took to the sixth innings of game two before they seemed to manufacture with any authority. Watching six go out though was a bit of fun, and having seen seven fly out today, we're on track for about 70 in the season, so there'd be a bit of entertainment for the new fan who might prefer that over a tight 1-0 affair. A couple were pop-fly homers, but Karlsen's sailed well over the 360 sign and Hashimoto's shot that clanged off the top of the containers in right made an awesome sound - that was fun. A great day at the park - well worth the two day one hour and fifteen minute wait. 783 your attendance today and all would have gone home happy I am sure. For those wanting to see footage of the first pitch at 'The Show', it is recorded for posterity at the following: (apologies, I'm still learning how to use the video on my phone)
